Direct without performing niceness

A buried request is not kindness. Thursday can still be findable if you stop disappearing it.

12 September 2026

Same request, two deliveries.

“Could you maybe possibly take Thursday if it is not a huge deal, I totally get it if not, I know everyone is slammed.”

“I need you on Thursday pickup. I have a late meeting.”

The first one is performing niceness. It sounds careful. It also teaches them the ask is optional before they have answered. The second one is findable. You can still say please. Please does not require a disappearing request.

People get punished unevenly for the same firm sentence. That is real. It does not mean the solution is to smile until Thursday vanishes. Keep the meeting. If they only object to the fact of a preference, that is the objection. Do not fix it with more sugar.

Practice the second sentence until it does not feel like a crime. If your mouth adds the first paragraph automatically, that is the rehearsal, not a new personality.

Rehearse the findable ask

Questions about this

Does direct mean blunt?

Direct means the request is findable. You can still say please. You cannot bury the request under six softeners and then call yourself kind.

What if they call me harsh whenever I am clear?

Ask which words were harsh. If the only complaint is that you had a preference, that is useful information. Do not automatically add sugar until the ask disappears.

Is this different for women?

People get punished unevenly for the same sentence. That is real. The fix is not “sound sweeter so they allow it.” Keep the ask. If the room is punishing you for having one, that is the room, not a missing smile.

Should I smile when I say it?

Only if you mean it. A fake smile on a firm ask confuses the message. Face and sentence should match.
