You were cooking. The sentence came out harder than the thing you meant. Their face changed. You can feel the next three days from here: quiet kitchen, careful passing, nobody naming it.

Fast repair is not a speech. It is interrupting your own line before it hardens. “Wait. That came out wrong. I am stressed about work and I should not take it out on you.” Then stop. Do not stack an explanation of your week. The extra story sounds like a defense of the snap.

Perfect communication is a fantasy for people who are not tired. Most couples do not need a better philosophy of conflict. They need the ten seconds after a bad sentence. If you wait until you have the right framing, you will wait until bedtime, then until morning, then until it is “too late to bring up.”

Knowing the line is cheap. Using it while you are still hot is the part that fails. You will want to win the original point first. Repair first. The original point can wait until nobody is cooking.

If they do not soften, you still said the true thing. You cannot force a reset. You can refuse to pretend the snap did not happen.
