A joke comeback is not a repair
You won the laugh. You still have to pass the salt. Dunks store interest.

They complain. You get a laugh. The laugh is at them. You won the exchange. You still have to pass the salt.
A joke aimed at the situation can let air in. “We are doing the courtroom again” includes you. “Wow, someone is sensitive” is a punchline with a roommate attached. Their face will tell you which one you told.
Internet clips teach comebacks for hecklers. Your partner is not a heckler. If you needed a repair, do the repair. If you needed to hear the complaint, hear it. The dunk is cheaper and it stores interest.
Rehearse staying with the complaint for one more sentence before humor. If the only line you can find is a jab, you are not ready to talk yet. Wait until you have a real sentence.
Rehearse staying with the complaint before the punchline.
Questions about this
Are jokes always bad in a fight?
A joke that lets both of you breathe can help. A joke that makes them the punchline is a win for the room and a loss for the kitchen. You can tell which one you told by their face.
What if humor is how I cope?
Cope after the repair, or with a joke aimed at the situation, not at them. “I am doing the courtroom thing again” is different from “wow, someone is sensitive.”
Is this about insults from strangers?
No. Stranger dunks are a different sport. This is for someone you still have to eat with.
What do I do instead of the comeback?
Name the actual complaint in one sentence, or repair if you snapped. If you need a line, use the one on the repair page.
