A question you can decline vs one you should answer

Nosy is not the same as “who has Thursday.” A shutdown on the wrong question looks like evasion.

Two questions get treated as the same skill. They are not.

“When are you having another kid?” is personal. You can decline it. “Who has Thursday pickup?” is a real scheduling question. Dodging it is not a boundary. It is leaving the other person holding the bag.

For the first: “We are not talking about that.” You do not owe a medical story at a barbecue. A joke can work once. A speech about why the question is violent usually turns the picnic into a seminar.

For the second: name the day. If you do not know yet, say when you will. “I will text you by 6.” That is an answer. “Why do you always assume I will do it?” might be true and still not Thursday.

People learn a clever shutdown and then use it on every hard question, including the ones they should answer. The other person hears evasion. You hear “I set a boundary.” Both of you are now fighting about character.

Before You Say It is useful when you know which kind of question it is and you still freeze. Practice the decline, or practice the Thursday answer. Do not practice a comeback that wins the room and loses the plan. Harm is a different category. Get out. Do not workshop it.

practice the decline or the Thursday answer once you know which question it is.

Questions about this

What if I am not sure which kind of question it is?

Ask what they need the answer for. “Are you asking because Thursday is uncovered, or because you are curious about our family?” The purpose tells you whether a decline is fair.

Can I decline a work question?

You can decline gossip. You usually cannot decline “who owns this deadline” if you are the owner. Same split as Thursday.

What if the nosy question comes from family?

“We are not talking about that” still works at a barbecue. You do not owe a medical briefing for dessert. You do still owe a real answer if they are asking who is driving grandma.

Is a joke a good decline?

Once. The second joke trains them to keep poking. A plain sentence is less entertaining and more final.
