Freezing in the first ten seconds
Door, keys, joke. That is usually when the real sentence gets postponed.

Door. Keys. Ten seconds. That is usually when you switch to a joke or a weather report because the real sentence feels too large for the entryway.
Use the ten seconds for the request, or for “I have a request.” If your mind blanks, read it off your phone. Canceling because you blanked teaches you to cancel.
Impromptu drills on the internet time you for thirty seconds on a random prompt. Cute. Your life prompt is already chosen. Saturday. Thursday. The email. The first ten seconds are not a talent show. They are whether the subject exists.
If they start talking immediately, you are not done. Say so. Then return to the line you meant to open with, almost word for word.
Rehearse the first ten seconds with the ask, not the joke.
Questions about this
What should I say in the first ten seconds?
The ask, or “I have a request.” Not the history. Not a joke to test the water. Those ten seconds are where you usually abandon the point.
What if my mind goes blank?
Read the sentence off your phone. That is allowed. Blank is not a sign you should cancel the conversation.
Should I warn them a hard conversation is coming?
A specific opener is better than “we need to talk.” “I need two minutes about Saturday.” Then use the two minutes.
What if they start talking immediately?
See the pause page. First ten seconds still belong to the ask. You can say you are not done.
