One-sided conversations

You interview them all evening and leave unknown. Sometimes you never stopped talking long enough to be asked.

You ask about their day, their meeting, their mother. You leave feeling unknown. You conclude they are not curious. Sometimes that is true. Sometimes you never stopped interviewing long enough for a question to come back.

Finish a statement about you. Then stop. Let the air sit. If you panic and add another question, you are still carrying the conversation and calling it connection.

This is the other side of the pause problem. There you lose your turn. Here you never give them one. Both can happen before dessert.

If you leave space and they still never ask, believe that. Do not work harder at being the host. A rehearsal will not make someone curious. It can stop you from blocking the curiosity that was available.

Rehearse leaving space after a statement about you.

Questions about this

What if they really never ask me anything?

Leave space once. If they still never ask, that is data. Do not keep interviewing them as a substitute for being known.

How much space is enough?

Finish your answer. Stop. Count a breath. If you immediately add another question, you are still carrying it.

Is this the same as the pause article?

Pause is about not losing your turn. This is about not taking theirs. You can fail both in the same kitchen.

What if I ask questions because I am anxious?

Name that to yourself. One question, then a statement about you. Anxiety does not make the other person responsible for filling every second.
